Me & My Work

I divide my time between editorial and commercial commissions and longer term documentary style projects. I have over ten years experience carrying out commissions for a number of prominent UK and European publications and businesses. The commissions are usually either portraits or feature based - a brief list of some of these commissioners is provided below. Wherever possible, I try and apply the methods and interests of my documentary projects to these commissions.

The longer term documentary projects are often personally initiated but produced for publication and exhibition. The projects are informed by my exposure to Social Anthropology at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Projects typically involve making sequences of images flavoured by anthropological methods and interests - although the degree to which these ideas are manifest varies from one project to the next. Thus project sequences offer meditations on the notion of society and how that notion imposes itself on the outside ie photographable world, in terms of people's appearance, body language, tastes and consumption habits as well as the environments within which they live and work. In addition, each project attempts to incorporate some kind of reflexive element; seeking to explore the impact of the photographer on the field, the relationship between between the photographer as observer and their subjects the observed / photographed. I find this an especially fertile area to explore and it formed one of the dominant themes of my Head Space project.

In addition to my photography work I write the odd review and am branching out into video documentary. I am currently based in Spitalfields, East London, a locale for which I have a great affection... most of the time.

A profile on my career with particular emphasis on the Head Space project appeared in the British Journal of Photography 24 November 2004 issue.
